Trust the Process: A Master Bathroom Eight Months in the Making

Eight months. Countless decisions. A few unexpected detours. One extraordinary result.

One of the first conversations I have with every new client is that hiring an interior designer is truly a partnership. The best projects are built on open communication, collaboration, patience, and trust in the process.

This master bathroom renovation was the perfect example.

Not every renovation is seamless. Throughout this project we navigated change orders, custom fabrication timelines, scheduling conflicts, and even vendor ordering mishaps that tested our schedule more than once. Yet, with patient clients, a responsive contractor, talented craftsmen, and a tenacious designer, we stayed the course.

The result is a bathroom that feels effortless—but only because every detail was thoughtfully considered.

THE BEFORE
When my clients, a young professional couple, purchased this home two years ago, they immediately knew the primary bathroom wasn't living up to the rest of the home. While it had been renovated over twenty years ago, the space felt dated and lacked both function and luxury.

More importantly, they wanted their home to reflect memories from their travels. They envisioned a serene retreat with timeless materials, thoughtful storage, and luxurious features that would elevate their everyday routine.

Step One: Creating the Space

Sometimes the best design starts with a blank slate.

Removing the existing bathroom and two adjacent closets allowed us to dramatically expand the footprint and completely reimagine how the room would function.

Building the Foundation

Timeless design begins with timeless materials.

Large-format MSI Soreno Ivory 24" x 48" porcelain tile creates a seamless backdrop across both the floors and shower walls.

To introduce texture without overwhelming the room, we selected MSI UrbanSlat White 16x48, installed floor-to-ceiling as an architectural feature in its own right.

Warm Driftwood cabinetry from Masterpiece Cabinetry pairs beautifully with Calacatta Valentin quartz countertops, creating a balance of warmth and sophistication.

Hidden within the cabinetry are personalized details including custom cosmetic storage and a dedicated hot tools drawer—small conveniences that make a big difference every day.

The Details That Make It Personal

Positioned beneath a stunning Crystorama Calypso chandelier, the Loretta Dolomite Matte White soaking tub creates a peaceful focal point inspired by the luxury resorts my clients love to visit.

The ribbed detailing of the Newport Brass Pardees faucets complements the vanity hardware, while Visual Comfort Utopia sconces frame illuminated Ambiance medicine cabinets, creating beautiful, flattering light.

One of my favorite custom features is the wall-to-wall mirror with integrated LED lighting and cabinetry trim. It not only visually enlarges the room but provides exceptional lighting for everyday routines.

CREATING THE SPACE

As part of the redesigned layout, we also took advantage of an otherwise awkward pocket of space adjacent to the newly designed private water closet. Rather than allowing it to become wasted square footage, we transformed it into a highly functional linen and laundry closet complete with built-in shelving and a concealed pull-out hamper. This custom solution not only maximizes storage but also keeps everyday essentials organized and easily accessible—proof that thoughtful design finds purpose in every inch of a home.

The most rewarding part of every project isn't simply the finished room. It's watching clients walk into a space that was designed entirely around how they live. Every finish, every cabinet, every fixture, and every custom detail tells their story.

This renovation certainly challenged everyone involved, but it also reinforced something I remind clients of often: The best projects are built on trust.

Trust in the process. Trust in your team. Trust that thoughtful design takes time.

The result is a timeless master retreat that will serve this family beautifully for years to come.
