A new year and wrapping up 2023…

WINTER 2024 Newsletter

2023 was an inspiring year…from wrapping up our 1854 Farmhouse renovation to completing an extensive basement makeover as well as our many ongoing projects, I look forward to continuing to share with you the process and factors that contribute to creating these beautiful designs in upcoming newsletters.

Our Winter 2024 newsletter wraps up the details of our spectacular basement makeover with the transformation of the home theatre, gym, and bathroom. By implementing a few tweaks in the floor plan and imparting a little creativity, this basement is now ready for a winter of indoor fun!

With the main entertainment area completed, the next major obstacle in this transformation was the theatre room. The homeowners wanted to maintain the space but found the current room to ‘miss the mark’ with inadequate seating, no storage (for refreshments), and a quirky setup.

Remember this photo? That white door WAS the original entry into the theatre room located at the base of the stairs.

This was the view from where you would enter. A bulky surround housed an outdated screen. A recess in the ceiling served no purpose and a non-functional alcove housed a well-worn loveseat.

Movie seating amounted to a few select Barca loungers and for refreshments - a mini fridge sat on a raised landing in the rear of the room.

The room makeover started by relocating the entrance. This allowed for a better flow from the main entertaining area and freed up square footage in the theatre room thus maximizing space for theatre-style seating across the full width of the room.

The sound system was upgraded. An overhead projector was strategically placed in the recess portion of the ceiling. Custom wood paneling houses sconces as well as a built-in screen and speakers.

Custom cabinetry was installed in the alcove to house the electronics as well as a built-in undercabinet fridge. My client now has ample cupboard and counter space for entertaining and storage for snacks.

Alabaster sconces, Visual Comfort’s by Kelly Wearstler, were integrated within the floor-to-ceiling panels. The millwork was painted a dramatic hue - Sherwin Williams’ Tungsten. Starry lights and dimmer switches enhance the experience!

Next up - the GYM area….

The “gym” was NOT inspiring!

Once again, we decided to tweak the floor plan to add square footage and more usable space.

A new entry area, rubber mat flooring, and built-in storage brought inspiration back to my clients’ workouts.

and then there was the BATHROOM….

YIKES! Last but not least, after a good workout you need a proper bathroom…..

The Eldorado brick from the bar area was duplicated as a feature wall. We maintained the original cabinet and selected a 3” thick solid surface countertop with an integrated bowl. Brizo bath fixtures and Chapman and Myer’s Geneva light in polished nickel gave this bathroom an industrial chic vibe.

By installing the same LVT flooring from the main room into the bathroom we have a seamless transition. The shower has been widened, now with a built-in bench. We continued a neutral color palette with Orion Bianco INFINITY porcelain tile and coordinating mosaic for the shower floor.
